Sunday Replay 07.04.10

What a great day we had at New Hope!

We kicked the day off with an awesome time of worship, and then began a new series through the book of James, “Faith @ Work.”

One of the misconceptions about the book of James is that it is kind of about “do-it-yourself” Christianity – but nothing could be further from the truth.  James is talking to followers of Christ – he’s not telling us how to be saved, but how to live and apply faith, AFTER we’re saved.

The book of James is all about “applied Christianity.”  James’ overarching theme for the entire book can be found in the 2nd chapter – “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?” (James 2:14 NLT) We brought that idea into our world by saying, If you don’t use your faith, for all practical purposes, it is worthless… If you don’t apply what you know – it’s the same as not knowing it… faith that is not applied to everyday life is worthless, useless, dead… If faith is going to do us any good – has to be put to work…”

Sunday evening was “party time” as we kicked off our 3rd annual 4th of July Community Outreach!  We had a blast – literally!  300+ people enjoyed barbeque, bluegrass music by “Branded Bluegrass”, snow-cones, balloons, and the best seat in town for the community fireworks.

I told our team that headed up the event – “I’ll be the first to admit that Jesus may not have had BBQ, bluegrass, and fireworks in mind when he talked about giving a cup of cold water in his name, but we served our community in a memorable way Sunday – and served Christ in the process.”

We’ve got a busy few weeks ahead of us – handing out free bottles of cold water during the fair, and our Bible Beach Club VBS event.  Jump in and serve – you are needed!

Have a great week!
