New Hope is Coming!

After nearly thirty years of ministry, Bible study, and worship as Jubilee Fellowship, our church will change its name to New Hope Community Church on Easter Sunday, April 4th.

It has become increasingly clear to church leaders that it was time to put out a new shingle to open doors for us to tell our story, and let the community know about what’s going on here.

Frankly, almost any church could benefit from a fresh start.  We have somewhat of what I call a ‘Jacob’ issue. In the Bible, Jacob didn’t have the best reputation.  Our church has had to deal with negative perceptions, some deserved and some not.  Rightly or wrongly, there are a handful of folks in our community who don’t have a very high opinion of Jubilee.

But God changed Jacob’s name to Israel – from a name that meant ‘deceiver’ to one that basically meant ‘God’s strength.’ Changing our name declares that our church has made amazing progress.  We hope to change some minds and some opinions.

There are also some very good, upbeat reasons to change names…  God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, and Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, and Saul’s name to Paul.  In those cases, the men were being led by God on new journeys, with new direction and renewed purpose.  Positive things like that are happening today in our church.  God is blessing, lives are being changed, the church is growing, and there’s buzz of excitement in the air.

We also believe the new name will communicate more clearly what our church is all about.  “Jubilee Fellowship” is kind of a church insider term, and not many people know exactly what it means. “New Hope Community Church” lets people know right away why we’re here and who we’re here for – to bring new hope to everyone in our community.

I know a lot of things have changed and are changing – and I know that makes people kind of twitchy… So please hear this: Some things will never change – we preach and teach the Gospel of Christ for salvation and we believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit.  That message is the foundation of all we do,  BUT – we will continually look for culturally relevant ways to engage – to “gain a hearing” – with searching people who need to find their way to God.  Yes, there is a tension in that walk – but we believe it is where God is leading the church in our culture today.

We’re excited about where we’re going!  Come join us on the journey!

For those in the community that do not have a high opinion of Jubilee, that is their right, but they must not have attended lately. I think the new name is awesome and does show the direction God is taking this Church. Let’s move on and win souls for Christ.

Loved the message leading up to the announcement on the name change back in January. Greg and I are ready to help with bringing New Hope to the community….can’t wait to see what’s in store for this year!
Thanks for your leadership – we appreciate YOU and your vision for New Hope so much.
