Sunday Replay 12-2-2007

What a fantastic day the Jubilee family had in worship yesterday!  We rejoice with the angels that Tom T. made his decision to surrender to Christ as Savior and Lord!  We were able to bless Kathy T. and pray for her as she and Tom head to Mayo for evaluation and treatment – Please continue to pray for her healing.

We also concluded our “T3” series – a look at how we can make the best possible use of our Time, Talent, and Treasure…  Here’s yesterday’s message outline:

2 Corinthians 8:7

Two Core Truths about Treasure:

1. Talking about money is thoroughly biblical…  Money is mentioned over 800 in Scripture.  Jesus talked about money, possessions and stewardship more than any other subject.

Out of 111 sermons I have preached since coming to Jubilee – only one has been about money and giving!  That’s less than 1%…

2. “Giving” is about more than money…  It is first and foremost about our attitude: Do I regard my possessions as my things to do with as I please?  Or do I understand that everything I have has been loaned to me by God to be used, managed in a way that is pleasing to Him?

We give more than money – we give our time, our prayers, our presence, our willingness to serve and minister.

Five Reasons to Excel in the Grace of Giving

1. To Obey God’s Command – 1 Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 9:7 God clearly proscribes regular, proportional giving

2. To Avoid GreedLuke 12:15

When we give generously, regularly, we are reminding ourselves that the things of this world will one day pass away, and there is something and Someone that is more important.

3. To Express our Love for Christ and His ChurchEphesians 5:25

If we love the church, we will also sacrifice for it as Jesus did.  Sacrifice is a natural expression of love

4. To Advance the Kingdom

The offering demonstrates weekly that there are many forgiven and grateful people who believe in the core truths this church teaches, and who want to see the message continue to spread… That there are people who believe that God has raised this church up for a mission and they want to participate, have a stake in seeing that mission fulfilled.

5. To Receive a Blessing – 2 Corinthians 9:6

The Elephant in the Room: How Much Should I Give?

You should give as much as you “have purposed in your heart.”

In the Old Covenant, giving was regulated and legislated by the tithe – a 10% offering.  Today, I believe the superiority of Jesus and His Covenant means Christians should exceed that mere legal requirement.

Generous, regularly, sacrificial giving that exceeds the tithe is our recognition and affirmation of the superiority of Jesus, and an expression of our appreciation for all that He has done for us.

Well, that’s Sunday in a nutshell…  If you weren’t able to be with us, be sure to request a tape.
