Trouble Brewing…

December 22, 2007

Vic and I are coffee drinkers… She makes “half-caff” at home and enjoys her cup or two or three during the morning, while I can drink any kind of coffee anytime, anywhere.  We are Starbucks fans – we call it “Five Bucks” because between my “venti brewed coffee, leave room, two shots of sugar-free vanilla” and Vic’s tall latte, our tab always runs around five dollars.  And if you have no idea what that last sentence means, you are hereby ordered to drop what you’re doing and get to the nearest Starbucks for an education.  Don’t forget your wallet.

So imagine our frustration over the last two years as we have experienced the constant hassle of malfunctioning coffee makers.  We’ve had eight coffee makers in the past two years – five in our home and three at my office.  There have been a variety of problems – one died because we didn’t know the use of unfiltered well-water meant we had to de-lime, de-scale, and vinegar pressure wash the coffee maker every three days; another had switch problems that turned the machine off after brewing only one or two cups at a time (the manufacturer sent us two replacements that did the same thing); the hot plate on yet another machine quit heating up (There’s nothing like lukewarm coffee when you’re expecting something hot!).

Strangely enough, we never gave up.  There was never a time when we said, “This is so frustrating and tiresome that maybe we should think about giving up coffee.”  Instead, we trudged to the convenience store for a couple of Styrofoam cups of questionable vintage.  More than once I carted the coffee maker from the office to home and back so we could have coffee.  We are hardcore, committed, dedicated coffee drinkers, and we’re willing to work through the hassle to get the stuff.

It might be a stretch, but I think there’s a larger truth here: We’re all “malfunctioning units” – constantly giving God fits by getting our lives gunked up… by quitting too soon… by failing to hold a spiritual temperature above lukewarm.  And yet He doesn’t quit us.  There’s never a point at which He says, “Forget it – this person isn’t worth the effort.”  God’s grace means – among many other things – that He never ceases his furious pursuit of the messed up and straying creation that He loves so much.

Now, I’m going to try to keep that in mind whenever I see a hot cup of coffee – or about a dozen times a day.  Whichever comes first.

Sunday Replay 12-16-2007

December 17, 2007

Seven days.  One week.  That’s how long my “pronouncement” that we WOULD NOT cancel services at Jubilee due to weather held true…  We cancelled Sunday.

It was a good call.  At 8:45 that morning, the wind and snow were blowing, we knew people from the outlying areas wouldn’t make it in, and we were afraid that those who did make it might not be able to get back home…

So we pulled the plug.  It was the right thing to do, but I have still taken a lot of good natured ribbing from folks who heard me make the “no cancellation” speech.  Hey, I can take it… If you need me, I’ll be over here in the “speaking without thinking” zone.

Big Thanks: To the guys who cleared snow from the parking lot and sidewalks!  Thanks Tony, John, Mike, and Bob.  I’m not sure if anyone else helped, but we sure do appreciate those who were willing to get out in that mess for the benefit and convenience of others.  Also, thanks to Ron, Kathy, Todd, and Ben for help getting the word out about the cancellation.

Christmas Program Update:  “Live from Bethlehem” will be presented by our children’s ministry this Sunday, December 23rd.  The adult program will most likely be presented on the evening of Sunday, December 30th, but we’ll keep you posted on that as it develops.

I’m so excited about what God has in store for Jubilee and our community in 2008!  We will kick start the New Year with a 6 week “church-wide expereince” called “Life on Loan.”  Through worship, messages, small groups, and personal study we will learn how God can and will use us and our “story” to impact a community with the Kingdom of God.  December 30th is “Registration Sunday.”  Keep watching and listening for more information.

Have a great week!

Sunday Replay 12-9-2007

December 10, 2007

The ice storm kept some folks at home yesterday, but the ones who showed up warmed themselves with worship and the Word!

Weather Policy:  We will have services if there is snow and ice, but please use discretion and your best judgment.  Don’t attempt to drive if you feel unsafe.  The only situation I can think of at the moment when we would not meet is if there was no power at the building. There may be times when it’s advisable to delay services for an hour or so – listen to Shine 99, WSHW 99.7FM & WILO 1570AM for that information.

We’re so excited about next Sunday: It’s Christmas Program day!  The children will present “Live from Bethlehem” during the 10:00 AM worship service, and the adults will presents skits and special music at 6:00 PM.  A cake & coffee fellowship will follow the program on Sunday evening.  Make plans to be there and invite your friends and neighbors.

We began a 2 part series yesterday, “What Child is This?” focusing on the story of Jesus in the first chapter of John’s gospel.  Part one is available on tape, and we will wrap up the series with part two on Sunday, December 23rd. Here’s the outline:What Child is This? – John 1:1-13

The Reality about Jesus

1. He is eternal – He has always existed.   “Before Abraham was born, I am,” John 8:58

2. He is the Creator of all things.  For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things have been created through Him and for Him.  He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.  Colossians 1:16-17

3. He is Life and Light . “let there be light.”  Genesis 1

The Response to Jesus

1. Some ignore Him. “and the world did not know Him.”

2. Some reject Him.  “His own did not receive Him.”

3. We have to receive Him.  “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name…”

“After further review…”  that’s the Sunday replay.  God bless you all, have a great week!

Merry Tossmas…

December 6, 2007

Years ago, a music group called “Tribute” used to come to the church camp I attended.  The keyboardist was this guy with a wacky sense of humor named Stuart Shephard.

This was the “knee high tube socks” era of the 70’s, man, and I remember one year when Stuart wore a tube sock on his arm and a shoe on his hand ALL DAY!

Well, Stuart’s all grown up and today he’s the managing editor of CitizenLink for Focus on the Family.  Check out his special Christmas greeting to the nation’s retailers who go way out of their way to wish everybody a Happy Non-Specified Holiday…

What a fantastic day the Jubilee family had in worship yesterday!  We rejoice with the angels that Tom T. made his decision to surrender to Christ as Savior and Lord!  We were able to bless Kathy T. and pray for her as she and Tom head to Mayo for evaluation and treatment – Please continue to pray for her healing.

We also concluded our “T3″ series – a look at how we can make the best possible use of our Time, Talent, and Treasure…  Here’s yesterday’s message outline:

2 Corinthians 8:7

Two Core Truths about Treasure:

1. Talking about money is thoroughly biblical…  Money is mentioned over 800 in Scripture.  Jesus talked about money, possessions and stewardship more than any other subject.

Out of 111 sermons I have preached since coming to Jubilee – only one has been about money and giving!  That’s less than 1%…

2. “Giving” is about more than money…  It is first and foremost about our attitude: Do I regard my possessions as my things to do with as I please?  Or do I understand that everything I have has been loaned to me by God to be used, managed in a way that is pleasing to Him?

We give more than money – we give our time, our prayers, our presence, our willingness to serve and minister.

Five Reasons to Excel in the Grace of Giving

1. To Obey God’s Command – 1 Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 9:7 God clearly proscribes regular, proportional giving

2. To Avoid GreedLuke 12:15

When we give generously, regularly, we are reminding ourselves that the things of this world will one day pass away, and there is something and Someone that is more important.

3. To Express our Love for Christ and His ChurchEphesians 5:25

If we love the church, we will also sacrifice for it as Jesus did.  Sacrifice is a natural expression of love

4. To Advance the Kingdom

The offering demonstrates weekly that there are many forgiven and grateful people who believe in the core truths this church teaches, and who want to see the message continue to spread… That there are people who believe that God has raised this church up for a mission and they want to participate, have a stake in seeing that mission fulfilled.

5. To Receive a Blessing – 2 Corinthians 9:6

The Elephant in the Room: How Much Should I Give?

You should give as much as you “have purposed in your heart.”

In the Old Covenant, giving was regulated and legislated by the tithe – a 10% offering.  Today, I believe the superiority of Jesus and His Covenant means Christians should exceed that mere legal requirement.

Generous, regularly, sacrificial giving that exceeds the tithe is our recognition and affirmation of the superiority of Jesus, and an expression of our appreciation for all that He has done for us.

Well, that’s Sunday in a nutshell…  If you weren’t able to be with us, be sure to request a tape.
